Cozumel
Scuba Divers
and Cruise Line Passengers have known for years that Cozumel is
among the best destinations in Mexico. Located just off the coast
of the Yucatan Peninsula, the island of Cozumel often sits in the
shadow of Cancun's illustrious reputation as the "best" resort on
the peninsula. It's relatively low profile and gorgeous ecology
make Cozumel one of Mexico's best resort towns in which to stay,
especially if you enjoy diving and snorkeling.
During the
17th and 18th centuries, Cozumel became a favorite hideout for pirates,
who ambushed and sunk many cargo ships off of the island's shores.
Consequently, divers love the ocean floor surrounding Cozumel. The
many ships and colorful reefs provide a diving experience unlike
any other in the world.
Until Cozumel
was established as a major resort destination, the island subsisted
primarily on chicle, coconuts, and seafood. When Jacques Cousteau
recognized the marvels of Cozumel's waters as a diver's heaven in
the 1960s, development began and led to the development which is
known today.
